IM can replace walking over to the colleague, saving some time
and it also has a few other benefits:

- Copy & Paste doesn't work in normal talk
- You can see the one you want to talk to is there and available
  without walking across the hall, over to the other building.
- It's a true dialog (in contrast to email).

Just what crossed my mind instantly, I'm sure there's more.
