It will even be hard to find a server that does not support at least
fallback to A records (fallback to AAAA is only required if your support
IPv6) - even if you use very old software.
A records are supported by Jabber for a longer time than SRV records
(and SRV records are supported since 2000-10-05). Before using SRV
records, jabberd (which as the defacto standard at that time) used MX
records in reverse order (which as a very ugly hack).
And probalby using SRV records has been a suggestion by Rick van Rein
(http://dns.vanrein.org/srv/tools/)
Software not supporting fallback to A records would not work very well.
Many servers out there have only an A record and no SRV records. - And
not that long time ago we had even jabber.org not being able to connect
to servers depending on SRV records.
