The jcr.log file (by default) is placed in the directory where the 
command was run.

I'm not sure how you installed mu-conference on [k]ubuntu, but there is 
a file called CONFIGURATION included in the JCR distribution. It has all 
the options for the JCR configuration file. One of those options is 
<logdir> which allows you to place jcr.log file anywhere.
