[jadmin] error with jabberd 1.4.2 server start up

I got the issue resolved. I just had to go to the directory where I have jabberd installed and say jabberd -H . where . was the current working directory.

You may also want to try to find a binary of the 1.4.4 version or compile a new one from the source.  1.4.2 is very old.  Ejabberd is another server that provides binaries.
