This was exactly the case for me.  There was no requirement for
it and certainly no money.  I just thought it would be a useful
tool for communicating between buildings at work.

no problem.  I see that those who replied mentioned several
servers but no one mentioned plain jabberd 1.4.  It wasn't too
hard to setup.  There is a Windows version but I used the Linux
one because there weren't any 2000/XP PCs available at the time.
I am hardly a linux expert but I managed to use an old leftover
200 MHz PC with SuSE 9.0 installed.  It was fairly easy to do.
