Just for the record:
Thanks to Paul I've managed to set up our Jabber server to 
authenticate against our LDAP with one caveat: I had to enable plain 
text passwords on the clients and to protect those had to switch 
server to SSL encryption. Now everything works just fine with LDAP 
etc.
