What about the messages? I still expect you sent them to just the 
username, which does not work ... btw same for the roster. You can have 
requested their subscirption wrong. Always you "user at domain" as an 
address. If you just set "user" to your contact list/roster, you will 
have this item on your roster, but it's not the user you are expecting.

As Marco already mentioned ... it would also be helpful if you would 
provide us with the messages you get in your log file.
