[root at appian mysql-4.1.21]# pwd
/usr/local/src/mysql-4.1.21

[root at appian mysql-4.1.21]# ./configure --help | grep zlib
  --with-zlib-dir=DIR     Provide MySQL with a custom location of compression
                          library. Given DIR, zlib library is assumed to be in
                          "bundled" to use bundled zlib.

That resolves the configure error with jabberd 1.4.4, but it now whines at
startup:
