Probably your client is Psi, and the status that the contact had set is
'invisible'.
There is no invisible status in xmpp and support for it was removed from
jabberd 2.1. jabberd 2.1 just forwards <presence type='invisible'/> to
contacts, as any other unknown status type, without any special
handling.

Psi "handles" unknown statuses by displaying this empty window. (It is
presence not message, but UI is using the same window for everything, so
you are confused.)
