[jadmin] jabberd2 and broken presence

I'm trying to set up a jabber2 (2.1.14) server. The thing nearly works,
with a little issue: presence messages don't seem to be correctly
handled.

I test the server with the psi client, and it will always report users
as offline, regardless of the actual status. It's possible to exchange
messages and perform a chat between users, but not to discover who is
online or not.

This is a real problem for creating multi user chatrooms: when I create
a room, psi will never open the chat window. As I understand, this is
because the chatroom presence announcement is not seen.

How can I debug this issue? Where should I start looking at?
