hrm, it's sounding like there's something wrong with the client or
server.  Can you try another client (like Psi or Gajim or Pandion) to
connect.  Most of the time jabber servers _must_ be addressed by the
correct name (and not by IP address), so even if it's just an internal
network it might help connecting by the name of the jabber server.

You can also check out the raw XML on most jabber clients (it's in the
Psi menu, or it's F12 in Pandion, Gaim and Exodus may also have one)
