I'm not too familiar with the terminology that Gaim uses, but it looks
to me like you're simply waiting for the other user to accept your
request. Once they've accepted, you should be able to receive presence
updates. (find out if they're online or not)

Jabber works in a way similar to how Yahoo! works, where the other
user has to allow it before you can add them to your list. (or at
least before adding them does any good.)
