[Juser] Unable to negotiate SASL, disconnecting.

I use Trillian as my Jabber client, which I just set up with my gmail 
address. Whenever I try to connect, the following message is logged in 
the client status window:

[08:49] *** Creating connection "philosopher1104 at gmail.com/Trillian"
[08:49] *** Auth: Unable to negotiate SASL, disconnecting.
[08:49] *** Disconnected from server.

Can anyone help me resolve this issue?
