But it does, it means server admins all have to update their servers to new
software for it to work, IMO the best solution to your problem presented so
far is Matthias Wimmer's suggestion of a simple script on your webserver
that supplies the client with the IP, that is best because it doesnt need
any modifications to the protocol, the installed server base, will work for
your immediately, and is under your control.

Maybe you should get a better gateway then (mine supports UPnP), a quick
search on google turned up a couple of linux projects on the go:

http://upnp.sourceforge.net/
http://kriku.gameland.ee/UPnP/

or pressure your gateways makers into making UPnP support more of a
priority.

Also it is already becoming mainstream, its not a ways off, as I have
already said a lot of the currently shipping ADSL equipment supports UPnP
(or has a firmware upgrade available).

Not necessarily, thats one server out of thousands that dont.
