The cck module field "image" allows to set up quite some stuff, along 
with the desired resolution you can point to the folder where the 
uploaded image will be stored.
That is perfect for us so we can keep icons screenshots and so on 
perfectly ordered.
IMHO the upload module (and the additional creation of extra nodes for 
every upload) is a bit bloated for our use.
