My plan was to use that area for all kinds of meta or extra information, 
much like the current page does it now. Due to the flexibility of blocks 
in drupal we can use that very versatile.

I will try to make the layout fit in about 900px width. But anything 
beyond that is too small for the amount of info we provide. Besides 
1024x768 and above are the most common resolutions for quite some time 
now, and if we try to satisfy even the 800x600px  resolution our page 
will look pretty ridiculous on a modern resolution like 1280 and above.
