I profoundly disagree with the implication that advertising Google Talk
is not "strengthening the network for everybody". As I said in my
earlier post, federation is what ultimately matters. The Network Effect
is only slightly hampered by the fact that Jingle isn't finished.
Google offer an undeniably solid solution for Joe Windows-User, far
better than most arbitrary XMPP client/server combinations. They had a
specification for an instant communications service, and voice chat,
blockable users and GMail notifications were part of that. They built
their service on XMPP, developed a client specific for their service,
along with branding and support for their in-house protocol extensions
to meet their specification, and this allowed them to be competitive.
(Yet, they are still being dicked on by WLM and AIM.) From chatting with
you, I know that you dislike big, data-hoarding conglomerates, such as
Facebook(!), but there is no conspiracy here.
