IMO Forums are much needed, mailinglists are great for tech savvy
developers that are motivated enough to subscribe to the relevant
mailinglists. Forums are great for less 'techie' discussions (i.e. by
our 'managers' and also the endusers). Forums are also more suited to
build an actual community around the site in specific and Jabber/XMPP in
general. Currently a large part of the community is spread out over the
projects (for example Psi) and currently there is nowhere to discuss
'what client/server/service' to choose except for juser (with 5
messages/month) which is really not suitable for your average internet user.
So I think we really should setup and integrate some forum system in
phase 2 (or 3 :D). Being an ex-phpBB developer I'm biased towards phpBB
(3.x) ofcourse but I can at least offer to properly integrate the forum
into the site/drupal. The forums in Drupal itself are too limited when
it comes to moderation and usability :\
