The jabber.org server has been having some problems. In fact it is
going to be down for a while this evening while it is upgraded to new
server software (which will hopefully solve the problems).

There is a server status page at http://status.jabber.org/
There is a chatroom at jabber at conference.jabber.org
There are multiple mailing lists (probably juser is the most
applicable here): http://www.xmpp.org/about/discuss.shtml

It was down this morning, probably around the time you were having
problems. Apologies for that, and hopefully it should settle down
again once the new software is set up this evening.
