Possible solution:
1) Add the CAPTCHA Riddler module ( http://drupal.org/project/riddler )
2) Add this custom CAPTCHA question to the registration for: "Do you
know you cannot use the account you are registering for instant
messaging? This account only works for adding comments to this
website. If you want to register an account for instant messaging,
please read this page:... If you want to post comments or if you don't
believe us, enter the word yes." (or something similar of course)

Advantages:
* protection against fake spam accounts
* protection against stupid Aunt Tilly users (for which the current
website is way too complicated, but you all already know my opinion
about that)
