I think that's too much extra stuff to maintain, too.

Actually I was rather thinking of a more simple way: set one fixed size 
and let the users decide what they do with it.

personally I would love to have everything in the 100% same style (size, 
type of window, position, ...) but this is impossible to communicate to 
the contributors.

Creating a mechanism that tries to push and pull everything together 
automatically will rather destroy end skew stuff. (wrong scaling makes 
images useless/unrecognizable)

That's why I was pondering of setting ONE image in ONE size. We can work 
with this very easy and I think it should be the contributors work to 
make it look nice.
So that way we can at least work with that in the upcoming new templates 
properly.
