No. We tried this, and we had in the few months the site user database
getting filled up with registrations of people who thought that they
actually get an IM account (16.786 afair). I think it is good to
seperate the community site from the informational site. They can
ofcourse be linked together on some levels, but there should remain a
clear difference. The people who should have an account should be the
devs, in order for them to publish their client / server information.

I agree, that it would be a pity to go back to a static page.
Especially, after all the work that has been put into the new website. I
say, we speed up the development of our Drupal 6 site, hoping that all
the problems we had are fixed in the modules. We prepare the new site on
a freshly installed machine with lighttpd and php5 (athena soon?) and
then simply do the switch. We get rid of the oversized user db, we keep
open registration disabled, as it will simply confuse people. Now we
know what problems there are with Drupal, so we can do it better on the
new Drupal 6.
Just my 2 cents ... or paragraphs :)
