[Juser] how to check the connection number between jabber server and postgresql

hi!

i want to monitor the connection number between the jabber server, 
say version jabberd-2.0s3 and the backend storage, say postgresql-7.3.4?
since i found that the database always got trouble. it couldn't shutdown normally. can anyone help me or point out a way out, thanks!
