In the very early days we used to have an IRC room but that was quickly
replace with a groupchat room when that was usable enough. I can't
imagine anyone really using IRC for Jabber conversations though.

Actually someone I met at XTech suggested to me that we should approach
FreeNode to see if they are interested in exporting all of their
channels as MUC rooms, too. Of course they would need software to make
this happen, but I know there are some IRC<->MUC gateway projects. Not
sure about their status though, and if that software would scale to
FreeNode's operation.
