I mentioned elsewhere...there is a Jabber authentication module for Drupal.
Email-verification based signup is also supported.

James Walker, who  is maintaining the jabber module, got a ping about some
beta code to integrate jwchat into Drupal.

What is Jabber? Why do standards matter? The IM wars, etc. etc.
