IMHO message, talk, and chat are all pretty good.
Message is more textish.
Talk sounds more telephonic.
Chat is very familiar. We have text chat, voice chat, and video chat, so
it's not limited to text.
If that's not specific enough we can also do something like OpenChat.
That's probably already trademarked or something, though...
