BACKGROUND

The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) and the Jabber developer community
will once again meet in Brussels the same weekend as FOSDEM for 2009. We
would prefer to meet in a DevRoom at FOSDEM if possible (last year we
met at a hotel).

This year we plan to focus on serious hacking and interop testing
related to the Jingle protocol, a set of open extensions to XMPP for
voice and video calls. Jingle is an evolution of the protocol used by
Google Talk and has been standardized by the XSF, with code on the way
in FOSS IM clients such as Pidgin, Kopete, Psi, Yate, Telepathy, and
Gajim. XMPP/Jingle can provide an open alternative to Skype and
therefore is one of the high priority projects of the FSF:

http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority.html#skypereplacement

We are working hard to build a free and secure alternative to Skype
using all open protocols and codecs. Holding a Jingle hackfest with a
large number of FOSS projects (also with DevRoom talks and perhaps a
keynote as I have applied for) will help us make this dream a reality.
BTW, we are also working on ways to use Jingle for end-to-end encryption
in Jabber -- see my 2007 keynote on Jabber Security.
