Just to shed a little light onto what Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is
about and how *you* could help.
Generally it's about getting students into the open-source world. For
GSoC this generally means coding work. For each accepted project the
student gets a mentor from the mentoring organization. The mentor
should ideally know the project quite well, so she/he can support the
student and answer questions. Students are paid by Google for the time
of GSoC, as is the mentoring organisation.
It's not about learning to code but more about learning the projects,
code for them and getting to know the open source world. So students
are expected to have at least *beginner* coding skills in the
programming language of the project.
What the XSF needs would be mentors, ideally from XMPP related
projects, and people interested with organizing the whole thing.
Organizing usually includes stuff like managing stuff in Google's GSoC
web app, reviewing project proposals and more. I bet Kevin can tell a
bit more about this.
Tobi (occasional GSoC student)
