IMHO it should be the task of the extension editor to keep and maintain
an authoritative copy and guard its integrity (what should be easy,
because you can always revert to a previous state). That copy can easily
be mirrored from/to github. No need to serve that out directly, maybe
even better not. But the great thing about git (or whatever DVCS) is
that others can easily maintain a copy of the archive too.

Last but not least: hosting at github would make my work-cycle dead-easy...
