I do not know what exactly the definition of push notification that you mean, but for your information that in http://mayplaces.com we have already implement push notifications for new mail (Mail to XMPP).
And as far as i know there is already an XMPP client that provides push notifications for offline message though to use the ad-free version you have to spend a few dollars.
