IE6 and Opera both render lists with padding-left correctly and as expected.

As far as I understood Byron's argument, Gecko's rendering is only
unexpected because it uses a proprietory style property instead of the
default CSS2.1 style sheet (not a bug as such).

Whatever the causes of Gecko's unexpected rendering, the workarounds for
clients using that engine are simple. Before rendering the XHTML can be
edited, either:
- by inserting <div/> wrapper elements with padding-left around each block
- or by changing all instances of padding-left to margin-left
