[JDEV] setting presence kills 1.4 and 1.4.1

Well, that's bizarre. I do the same test on my 1.4 server (RH 7.0) and
it works fine. If your XML were invalid you'd get:
<stream:error>Invalid XML</stream:error>Connection closed by foreign
However your XML is fine. Are you on some funky platform?
