Not sure how that would be optional for a large organization. We have a
significant number of external facing firewalls globally. The A record
for our domain may resolve to one firewall, the MX records to another,
and various SRV records to other yet.

Even that one is optional if you do the filtering/routing on the box
that's serving the domain :).
Please tell us if when you switched to the proposed method se we can
check if it works.
