As previously mentioned, I think that SRV records are nice but not
necessary.
However, self-signed certs are a problem. We give out free certs from
xmpp.net so anyone can get a free cert -- really there is no excuse for
self-signed certs, especially for XMPP services that are intended to be
part of the public network.
