you may wanna have a look at the Kontalk project which already has a client implementing
some simplifications you are proposing:
- server list + automatic server selection (and option to override)
- account creation by telephone number and user name (with SMS or Call verification)
- no password: authentication with a client certificate
- contact creation via sync with Android address book

All these mechanisms don't follow any standards as they simply do not exist. But unifying
anything here and having multiple clients with interoperability can make IM with XMPP a
lot better. [Disclaimer: I'm involved in this project]
