This is it in a nutshell.  

Jabber.com is, in the big picture, a pretty small 
operation.  They can't sway the market like some of the big 
players can, by releasing a product or spec and then 
shoving it down our throats.  

While I'm not privy to their business plan, it would appear 
to hinge on the success and wide-spread adoption of the 
Jabber protocol.  That's only going to happen by way of a 
successful OSS Jabber.  There's no way j.c can succeed if 
j.o fails.  J.c *needs* j.o.  J.o is where the growth 
happens, where other corporate entities get involved, where 
the innovation and integration happens. Without the open 
source component, Jabber.com is just one of, what, about 30 
or so IM wannabes, most of which have cratered over the 
past year.

Legitimacy and credibility of the Foundation are crucial to 
j.c's well-being.
