I agree that it's harsh but I think it's necessary to keep the membership
roll realistic. The primary reason to be a member is to vote so if you don't
vote, there doesn't seem to be much point in being a member. :)

In your particular case, I think the proper way to think of it is that your
membership has "lapsed due to inactivity". :) With a legitimate reason such
as illness causing the lapse, and a return from illness allowing you to
contribute to the community again, I think simply explaining such in your
re-application for membership should make you a shoe-in for being voted back
in on the next quarter.

In the meantime, rest, recuperate, and ease yourself back into things. I
hope you are feeling better!
