right, and the DOM is useless?

A standard is not the threat of death if you don't comply. A standard is
a suggestion (at best) on how to go about doing something.

Can I swap msie-dom into my xerces-c or gecko's xpcom dom? no. But the
DOM standard allows me to utilize whichever DOM implementation is best
suited to my environment without a *huge* learning curve. API
standardization is a Good Thing. at least for the users of the api.
