I was hoping someone else would chip in, since there's obviously a
conflict of interest between me as a candidate and me as an XSF
member, but:
Yes, I'm afraid so.
- We're partially reopening applications on the quiet, for only these
candidates.
- We're also biasing our voting against these candidates.
- We are increasing the obscurity of our voting; making it appear
less open and more concerned with who you know.
I think it'd be better to erase all the voting thus far, reopen
applications for an additional (say) 48 hours, and so on -
effectively calling this election null and void.
But I'm not wild about this, either - we don't really have anything
covering this in our bylaws.
I think there is a large can of worms here, and I think we need to be
very careful about how we handle this.
Do I want more Board and Council candidates? Absolutely. I made the
comment in the XSF chatroom a few minutes before Alex sent this that
I'd much rather be voted onto the Board for some reason other than
there being nobody else. It's frustrating and disheartening that so
few feel willing and able to stand for Board or Council.
Should we bend the rules when we have a chance to add a couple of
candidates?
I honestly don't know. I really want to be able to, but I don't think
this is the right way of doing so. I think the only reasonable thing
to do is drop this election and reopen applications - to all - until
the end of the week.
FWIW, I think the Board candidate being unable to sort out a
username/password is sufficient to argue for this - Waqas being late
through no fault of the XSF's isn't really the right trigger. If we
choose to restart the election, though, I'd be happy to see him (or
any other candidates) stand.
Dave.
