This is an important step and I would welcome joining the OIN very much.
It would give protection against patent claims far beyond anything we
have now. (Note that patent-pools work a bit like the nuclear missiles
during the cold war: it is a treat that if you fire on us, we will react
decisively, deliberately taking the risk of mutual destruction, a total
collapse of the patent system in this case. Joining a patent pool is
like joining the NATO, Warsaw Pact or whatever...)

But as far as I understand the legal construction of the OIN, the
members individually can say: XMPP is not Linux, so we don't have the
obligation to pull the trigger when XMPP is under attack. I would love
to see some better guarantee that the members of the OIN would indeed
react when XMPP is under attack: XMPP is, as far as I can see, further
away from the Linux ecosystem then anything else they protect.
