I haven't seen an argument on this thread that comes close to justifying a
move like this. If it was a hybrid email+XMPP solution, eg it combined chat
archives with list archives on a subject, I would be completely for this if
only for dogfooding.

But Discuss is the same kind of "walled garden social website provides the
one key feature we absolutely cannot do without!" that we're facing on
every other front with XMPP.
