O don't think it would be good. I would rather see more extensibility 
with probably feature-negotiation or disco used to discover supported
extensions (like MathML).

Images are IMHO no problem at all, but image displaying should be
optional for security resons. But <img/> element should always be
supported and alt attribute used if non-empty.

Me to. But the idea of converting textile typed by user to XHTML before
sending seems fine to me.
