There's definitely already support for this; it's a core part of the Jabber
protocol.  Just use a different resource for each login.  To use your
home/work/mobile example:

user at jabber.org/home
user at jabber.org/work
user at jabber.org/mobile

...tada.  I am frequently logged in as sparks at jabber.org/Trillian (my main
desktop) and sparks at jabber.org/laptop (my laptop, obviously)
simultaneously.  You only need to then set a priority for each of the
resources; I leave /Trillian at priority 1 and set laptop at priority 2, so
that it takes precedence (higher number) when I log on, and messages go
there. :)
