This is the weight of 'legacy'. That said at one time it was because many
parsers did not handle namespaces well. They are much better at it now, so
from a pure technical stand point there should not be any major issue using
it.

I agree. Unfortunately most of the installed base doesn't understand the
usage of prefixes. This would be a nice time to try and change that, but
you'd have to have a fallback.
