Loosely, I agree with Sergey, except I think he means:

<field var='pubsub#max_items'
         type='text-single'
         label='The maximum number of items to persist'/>

Rather than:

  <field var='pubsub#persist_items'
         type='boolean'
         label='Whether to persist items to storage'/>
