That wouldn't be a valid style either way per:

> the opening styling directive MUST be located at the beginning of the
> line, after a whitespace character, or after a different opening

Eg. a*text* wouldn't be valid, and if we've decided the initial star
isn't a valid styling directive  neither would **text* (which would just
be a plain span).
