A slightly facetious suggestion: ship a tiny authoritative nameserver with
your jabber server which just serves a zone along the lines below, and
tell your customers to get their DNS providers to set up records like
_xmpp-server._tcp.example.com. NS jabber.example.com.

@ SOA jabber.example.com. chatmaster.example.com 1 86400 3600 604800 3600
@ NS jabber.example.com.
@ SRV 0 0 5269 jabber.example.com.

(This will probably fail because a crappy SRV-ignorant DNS provider will
probably also not allow underscores in DNS labels.)
