https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#extensions-and-speci…
The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP
series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/)
in addition to [XMPP
RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/)
. Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [
XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html)
, which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. [Read more about the standards
process](https://xmpp.org/about/standards-process.html)
. Communication around Standards and Extensions happens in the [Standards Mailing
List](https://mail.jabber.org/mailman/listinfo/standards)
([online
archive](https://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/standards/)
). Proposed
https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#proposed
The XEP development process starts by writing up an idea and submitting it to the XMPP Editor. Within two weeks, the Council decides whether to accept this proposal as an Experimental XEP. - No XEP was proposed this month. New
https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#new
- No new XEPs this month. Deferred
https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#deferred
If an experimental XEP is not updated for more than twelve months, it will be moved off Experimental to Deferred. If there is another update, it will put the XEP back onto Experimental. - No XEPs deferred this month. Updated
https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#updated
- Version 2.5.0 of XEP-0030 (Service Discovery) - Add note about some entities not advertising the feature. (pep) - Version 1.34.6 of XEP-0045 (Multi-User Chat) - Remove contradicting keyword on sending subject in §7.2.2. (pep) Last Call
https://xmpp.org/2024/06/the-xmpp-newsletter-may-2024/#last-call
Last calls are issued once everyone seems satisfied with the current XEP status. After the Council decides whether the XEP seems ready, the XMPP Editor issues a Last Call for comments. The feedback gathered during the Last Call can help improve the XEP before returning it to the Council for advancement to Stable. - XEP-0421: Anonymous unique occupant identifiers for MUCs - XEP-0440: SASL Channel-Binding Type Capability Stable

| XMPP Communication Team and Contributors [XMPP Newsletter Banner] XMPP Newsletter Banner The 50th release of the XMPP Newsletter! This is the 50th release of the XMPP Newsletter since it started in February 2019. We think it is worth to celebrate this achievement and say thanks to all the contributors as well as all our readers! Back at the Summit in Brussels, JC Brand, Nicolas Vérité (Nyco) and Severino Ferrer (S0ul) proposed and initiated the XMPP Newsletter. Since then almost every month there has been a release full of news from the XMPP universe. Hence, we are looking forward to the next releases and invite you to participate in this community effort! We would love to see more contributors as well as more translations of the XMPP Newsletter. [Read more about how to help

Axel Reimer published an XMPP app decision table. It compares typical instant messaging features of popular XMPP apps and might be a guideline for new users who want to try an XMPP app. The table is available in [English](https://apps.xmpp24.de/english/) and [German](https://apps.xmpp24.de/deutsch/). You can now ask all your questions about [XMPP Providers](https://providers.xmpp.net) in the new [support
chat](https://providers.xmpp.net/blog/2024-03-11-xmpp-providers-chat/)
. That chat is hosted on an own XMPP server which is set up with the new [XMPP Providers
Server](https://providers.xmpp.net/blog/2024-03-28-xmpp-providers-server/)
project. It is a simple, Ansible-based all-in-one server setup that can be used for your own XMPP server as well. [Snikket Hosting is now publicly
available!](https://snikket.org/blog/snikket-hosting-launched/)
The launch is about providing new ways to get started with Snikket, not replacing the options that are already available. If you are already self-hosting Snikket, or planning to, nothing is changing for you. Though please do [donate to

- [Automating the
automatable](https://providers.xmpp.net/blog/2023-11-22-xmpp-providers-auto…
: During the past year, the team behind the [XMPP Providers
project](https://providers.xmpp.net/)
worked on automating the process of gathering data about XMPP providers. Automating this process reduces manual work significantly (for example, checking websites by hand, verifying information, listing sources, etc.) and helps to sustain the team’s efforts. Automation also enables the project to be up to date - every day! A [suite of
tools](https://invent.kde.org/melvo/xmpp-providers/-/blob/master/TOOLS.md#a…
has been developed since, providing the ability to query properties via XMPP and through the web. All of these tools are working together in a GitLab pipeline, which runs every night to keep the data up to date. - [Planned downtime + Happy 10th anniversary,

ejabberd](https://www.process-one.net/blog/automatic-schema-update-in-ejabb…
by Jérôme Sautret: Previously, if you were using ejabberd with an external relational database, you might have to manually apply some schema changes that come with new features when you upgrade to a new ejabberd release. ejabberd can now handle this schema upgrade automatically. This articles discuss about this feature. - [Software is

by Simon El Nahas: In the era of the green revolution, Erlang and Elixir languages are helping industries reduce server consumption and minimise environmental impact. Here are some industry examples demonstrating this. - Italian XMPP-IT Community - they have a website now:

, a group chat: [xmpp-it@conference.xmpp-it.net](xmpp:xmpp-it@conference.xmpp-it.net?join), they also have a Git to share, create and develop software, configurations and documents concerning the XMPP protocol:

https://xmpp.org/2023/12/the-xmpp-newsletter-november-2023/#extensions-and-…
The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP
series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/)
in addition to [XMPP
RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/)
. Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [
XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html)
, which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. [Read more about the standards
process](https://xmpp.org/about/standards-process.html)
. Communication around Standards and Extensions happens in the [Standards Mailing
List](https://mail.jabber.org/mailman/listinfo/standards)
([online
archive](https://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/standards/)
). Proposed
https://xmpp.org/2023/12/the-xmpp-newsletter-november-2023/#proposed
The XEP development process starts by writing up an idea and submitting it to the XMPP Editor. Within two weeks, the Council decides whether to accept this proposal as an Experimental XEP. - No XEPs proposed this month. New
https://xmpp.org/2023/12/the-xmpp-newsletter-november-2023/#new
- No new XEPs this month. Deferred
https://xmpp.org/2023/12/the-xmpp-newsletter-november-2023/#deferred
If an experimental XEP is not updated for more than twelve months, it will be moved off Experimental to Deferred. If there is another update, it will put the XEP back onto Experimental. - No XEPs deferred this month. Updated

- No XEPs updated this month. Last Call
https://xmpp.org/2023/12/the-xmpp-newsletter-november-2023/#last-call
Last calls are issued once everyone seems satisfied with the current XEP status. After the Council decides whether the XEP seems ready, the XMPP Editor issues a Last Call for comments. The feedback gathered during the Last Call can help improve the XEP before returning it to the Council for advancement to Stable. - [Community Code of
Conduct](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0458.html)
- This document describes the XMPP Standard Foundation’s Code of Conduct. This Last Call begins today and shall end at the close of business on 2023-11-30. Stable
