The XSF is planning [XMPP Summit 28](https://xmpp.org/2025/11/xmpp-summit-28/), which will take place on Thursday 29th & Friday 30th, January 2026, in Brussels (Belgium, Europe). Following the Summit, the XSF is also planning to be present at [FOSDEM 2026](https://fosdem.org/2026/), which will take place during Saturday, January 31st & Sunday, February 1st, 2026. - [Monocles](https://monocles.eu/) has released version [2.0.17](https://codeberg.org/monocles/monocles_chat/releases/tag/CodebergRe… of its chat client for Android. This update brings some fixes like more visible confirmation icons, update and add photo filter library, fix photo editor menu overlapping with status bar, setting to always use relays, and an improved extension deletion logic among many others. This release brings faster and more reliable connection management thanks to complete implementation of [Stream Management](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0198.html), [SASL2](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0388.html), [Bind 2](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0386.html) and [FAST](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0484.html). The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. Healthcare messaging must be secure, interoperable, and compliant, yet too often relies on closed consumer platforms. In the Netherlands, the forthcoming NTA 7532 specification aims to provide a national framework for secure, auditable communication between healthcare professionals.
To this effect, the XMPP Standards Foundation published the [‘Towards Secure and Interoperable Healthcare Chat’](https://xmpp.org/2025/10/towards-secure-and-interoperable-healthcare… open letter, in order to explain how the XMPP standard offers a proven foundation for NTA 7532, supporting vendor-independent and interoperable messaging. By engaging with initiatives like NTA 7532, the XSF promotes open, privacy-respecting communication technologies and invites collaboration with Dutch healthcare stakeholders and the global XMPP community.

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. On August 16th & 17th, 2025, the [FrOSCon](https://froscon.org/en/) will hold its 20th anniversary edition™. It will take place at the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in Sankt Augustin, Germany, and the XMPP community will be part of it!

The Gemeinsamer DevRoom von Gentoo e.V. und TroLUG will take place at Room C125, where [Gentoo e.V.](https://fosstodon.org/@Gentoo_eV) and [TroLUG](https://fosstodon.org/@TroLUG) will offer a rich and varied 2-day program on various topics, including the [Gentoo](https://www.gentoo.org/) and [Debian](https://www.debian.org/) distributions and free software for smartphones. The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. - [Libervia](https://libervia.org/) has received [NLnet](https://nlnet.nl/) funding to ‘Implement serverless (with RELOAD) and reduce metadata exposure’ ([Serverless and Metadata Reduction for XMPP](https://nlnet.nl/project/ServerlessXMPP/)). This project will reduce metadata exposure and enable decentralized, serverless communication. Work will focus on end-to-end encryption specs for roster (contact list) information. These changes will be implemented in the Libervia ecosystem through [Tor](https://www.torproject.org/) integration, which will help anonymize connections and reduce IP tracking. A second focus area is advancing serverless communication by implementing the RELOAD protocol [XEP-0415](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0415.html) and leveraging end-to-end authentication via [XEP-0416](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0416.html) and [XEP-0417](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0417.html). This project will strengthen XMPP and Libervia’s privacy and availability, enabling their use in environments where servers may be unavailable or inaccessible.

[Kaidan](https://www.kaidan.im/) has received [NLnet](https://nlnet.nl) funding for [various improvement across the board](https://nlnet.nl/project/Kaidan-MUC/), most notably multi-user chat and support for legacy OMEMO. The second point is significant because while Kaidan is using a newer version of the OMEMO end-to-end encryption protocol, other popular clients including Conversations, Monal, and Dino are still using an older version. Since the two are not compatible, this meant Kaidan users were unable to use OMEMO encryption with users of most other clients. By implementing the older spec as well, Kaidan will help bridge that gap.

This version brings initial support for file captions, the option to pin an unencrypted message to the top of a conversation, providers list support, and the option to register on your own XMPP server, among many other new features and improvements.

This release brings [multi-participant calls](https://movim.eu/#visio), reactions being displayed in the detailed message view, support for Unicode 15.1 with plenty of new emojis to use, and avatars that change when a contact adds to their [Story](https://movim.eu/#stories).

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. XMPP at FOSDEM 2025 https://xmpp.org/2025/03/the-xmpp-newsletter-february-2025/#xmpp-at-fosdem-…
During February 1st and 2nd, the [XSF](https://xmpp.org) was present at [FOSDEM 25](https://fosdem.org/2025/) in Brussels, Belgium. The XMPP community took part of the Realtime Lounge, a corner located on the 2nd floor of the K building, where several open source projects around [Real Time Communication (RTC)](https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/rtc/) can present themselves.
We are pleased to say that there was a lot of interaction at the XMPP booth! A rather large number of FOSDEM visitors had the opportunity to come say “Hi!”, meet, interact, talk and have interesting conversations with many of the developers of the most popular clients, servers, tools and libraries that power the whole XMPP ecosystem and bring it to life.
In addition to the activities that took place on the XMPP booth, [Jérôme Poisson (Goffi)](https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/speaker/jerome_poisson_goffi/) hosted a most interesting presentation in the [Real Time Communication (RTC)](https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/rtc/) room, titled: [A Universal and Stable API to Everything: XMPP](https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-5721-a-universal-a….

The XMPP Standards Foundation develops extensions to XMPP in its [XEP series](https://xmpp.org/extensions/) in addition to [XMPP RFCs](https://xmpp.org/rfcs/). Developers and other standards experts from around the world collaborate on these extensions, developing new specifications for emerging practices, and refining existing ways of doing things. Proposed by anybody, the particularly successful ones end up as Final or Active - depending on their type - while others are carefully archived as Deferred. This life cycle is described in [XEP-0001](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html), which contains the formal and canonical definitions for the types, states, and processes. The feedback gathered during the Last Call can help improve the XEP before returning it to the Council for advancement to Stable.
