Chat of the Future Initiative
by E.M. 15 Mar '26

15 Mar '26

Dear all, the XSF Communication Team is pleased to announce a new initiative to help evolving the XMPP ecosystem in a broader and aligned perspective. This should cover discussions, development but also extended public communication and presence. As this is being setup in an iterative way its participants will be able to form and steer the collaborations direction over time. You can read the full blog post here: https://xmpp.org/2026/01/chat-of-the-future-initiative/ After a number of questions let me elaborate a bit more. So, when you join the session(s) we will have a interactive collaboration board present where we will conduct different exercises. We start with basically exposure and a discussion of the networks status quo is as everyone sees it from their corner. If you have ideas of what you would like to change, you can just propose those. Ideas could be for example that members from the XMPP community are interest in an organised (regular?) interoperability meeting on certain XEPs. Others think of more engagement along encryption or building a better landing page for developers. In the end, all those great ideas and constructive feedback can be brought to the first session, but also at a later point. Out of this, the round will form a collaborative direction that anyone interested can join, commit and contribute to. There are more and other directing and hopefully fun exercises of this nature and we will collect, review and discuss ideas that could be worth moving on within a couple of months. Ideas, to be shaped in smaller activities, with no long time frames but effective outcomes that the ecosystem benefits at user or (new) developers level. We hope this is a motivating opportunity for the XMPP network and help us to step ahead all together. We also believe that such a collaboration can enable the network to evolve and gain new momentum and result in strong benefits for all actors. Feel free to comeback with your thoughts already. Best regards from the Communication Team, Eddie

XSF EU Legal Structure: Example Proposals
by Guus der Kinderen 12 Mar '26

12 Mar '26

Dear XSF community, Documentation has been prepared outlining example approaches for relocating the XSF's legal home to the European Union. These proposals are intended as lightweight, pragmatic illustrations of how such a transition could work. They are not intended to define the eventual legal form, and no decisions have been made. Please note: although I am currently a Board member, these proposals were created on my own accord and do not reflect any shared opinion or decision of the XSF Board. Currently, the examples focus on structures under Dutch law and assume a complete migration from the U.S. to the EU. They are meant to help the community explore possibilities, understand trade-offs, and discuss potential paths forward. The proposals can be found at: https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/XSF_EU_Legal_Transition_Proposal Please review these examples, ask questions, and share feedback - maybe even add alternative proposals of your own. Your input will help ensure that any future decision is well-informed, practical, and aligned with the needs of the XSF community. Kind regards, Guus

Recap Blogpost & Survey on XMPP Summit 28 + FOSDEM 2028
by E.M. 07 Mar '26

07 Mar '26

Dear all, This year the XMPP Summit 28 took again place in Brussels and we had great participation of almost 40 people attending in-person and online. We also had several new faces there which is great news, too! The same, FOSDEM 2026 took also place at ULB, and though we had to arrange for a new location our Realtime Lounge, the feedback and impressions have been mostly positive. Finally, writing a summary of our experience would be valuable and help others to gain interest in the way we work and the ecosystem are continuously building. To collaborate on this effort, everyone is invited to contribute to this pad before we will create a final PR to review: https://pad.nixnet.services/BoUphR54TnOzh774PhNWXw?view To provide your individual feedback everyone is invited to participate this survey on both events: https://xsf-communication-team.limesurvey.net/286665?lang=en&newtest=Y Please leave your feedback by Sun, 22nd February 2026. At this point, many thanks to everyone who supported us making both happenings a success! Best regards! Eddie

Sign Keep Android Open letter
by Travis Burtrum 27 Feb '26

27 Feb '26

Hello, As an open standards organization I think the XSF should sign https://keepandroidopen.org/open-letter/ There are many reasons but the most obvious is that Android is the most popular operating system in the world (wikipedia says). If you want XMPP adoption by users self hosting, or companies, or govts, they'll all need clients to run on android, and google has a long track record of blocking them. eg https://blog.jmp.chat/b/2026-google-wants-to-control-your-device it's also happened to Conversations and I believe Snikket. Guus asked that I email here to guage support so please reply to let the board know. If you are like me and despise email drop your support in xmpp:xsf@muc.xmpp.org?join and I'll forward it here for you. Thanks, moparisthebest

Discussion: Potential second XMPP Summit in 2026 (online?)
by Guus der Kinderen 20 Feb '26

20 Feb '26

Hi everyone, During the recent XMPP Summit, we discussed the idea of organizing a second Summit in 2026, potentially as an online-only event. The motivation behind this idea would be to: - Keep momentum going between in-person Summits - Lower the barrier to participation - Create space for focused discussions or follow-ups that don’t necessarily require physical presence At this stage, this is very much an open exploration, not a proposal. Some questions that might be worth discussing: - Is there interest in an additional Summit this year? - What goals would such an event serve? - Would an online format make sense, or are there better alternatives? - What kind of scope or duration would be reasonable? I'd like to use this thread to gauge interest and collect initial thoughts. If there's enough energy around this, we can look at concrete next steps later. Looking forward to your input. Kind regards, Guus

Discussion: More structured outreach and positioning of XMPP
by Guus der Kinderen 18 Feb '26

18 Feb '26

Hi everyone, At the Summit, we had a good discussion about outreach and positioning of XMPP, and whether we could be more deliberate in how we present XMPP as a technology in relevant communities and markets. One concrete idea that came up was: Having XSF representatives speak at selected events (conferences, meetups, etc.) More generally, this raises questions such as: - Where do we want XMPP to be more visible? - What audiences should we prioritize? - What kinds of materials, messaging, or support would be needed? - How can we do this in a sustainable, volunteer-friendly way? This thread is intended to collect ideas, experiences, and opinions on whether - and how - we might move toward more structured outreach. No decisions are implied at this point; the goal is simply to start a focused conversation. Kind regards, Guus

XSF Communication Team needs a new email account provider
by E.M. 18 Feb '26

18 Feb '26

TLDR: XSF Communication Team is asking to switch to mailbox.org for 30 EUR per year. Dear all, We would like to find a new email address for the XSF Communication Team that supports all our growing needs. Protonmail no longer meets these needs for a long time, either for free or at a reasonable price (while still respecting their service). We need such an account because Protonmail asked for a paid subscription to use SMTP with e.g. Thunderbird (yes really). We are also limited in organizing emails and the inbox as this is also restricted in the free plan. Additionally, we are currently blocked to use Reddit and LinkedIn with SocialBu with our Protonmail. We are therefore looking for a decent host that also supports a good level of compliance, privacy under GDPR, and possibly comes with more capabilities at a reasonable price. We have created a service comparison table here: https://pad.nixnet.services/331YAjbUQOmAWa2Octx_DA?view Later on, we could also ask Mailbox.org if they could provide a standard account for free. As they even used to run an XMPP server, they might be willing to support an account. However, I am not sure how such a collaboration should look like. Firstly, we are blocked being fully operational and able to expand as we could at the moment and I would like to switch first. Then we can expand cooperation and maybe even sponsoring. On the other hand, switching to mailbox.org would provide us with additional organisational tooling that could benefit the XSF and the XMPP Community such as custom domains and other office tools they provide. Best regards, Eddie

Agenda for XSF Board Meeting on February 19 2026
by Guus der Kinderen 18 Feb '26

18 Feb '26

Dear Board members, This email announces the agenda for our next Board meeting, scheduled for Thursday, 19 February 2026, from 17:00 to 17:30 UTC. The meeting will take place in the XSF chatroom at xmpp:xsf@muc.xmpp.org?join. Brief context is included for each agenda item to support preparation. *1. Welcome*Opening of the meeting. *2. Formalize Agenda*Confirm and approve the agenda for this meeting. *3. Vote on: XSF Communication Team's email provider budget*Proposal to approve the team's migration to Mailbox.org at approximately 30 EUR/year as discussed most recently on https://mail.jabber.org/hyperkitty/list/members@xmpp.org/thread/ODT43WOCRUE… *4. Progress report: decision-ready proposal for XSF's EU-based presence*Follow-up on Guus's commitment to present a concrete proposal for establishing a minimal EU presence for XSF, per action point of the Board meeting on 15 Dec 2025. *5. Summit follow-up discussion: Second XMPP Summit 2026 (online?)*Summit discussions showed interest; mailing-list feedback was limited. Validate whether sufficient interest still exists. Decide whether to proceed with lightweight exploration (e.g. call for volunteers, rough scope), or explicitly conclude that no further action will be taken at this time. *6. Summit follow-up discussion: Structured outreach initiatives*Ideas were discussed at the Summit; minimal follow-up input was received via the mailing list. Identify one or two concrete outreach initiatives worth pursuing (including an owner and success criteria), or explicitly conclude that no further action will be taken at this time. *7. Summit follow-up discussion: XMPP 2*Prior discussions expressed interest; little asynchronous feedback was received. Determine whether there is sufficient interest to warrant further work, and either mandate a scoped next step or explicitly conclude that no further action will be taken at this time. *8. Any Other Business (AOB)*Items not listed above that require brief attention. *9. Date of next meeting*Agreement on the date of the next Board meeting. *10. Close* Closing of the meeting. Please review the relevant materials ahead of the meeting so that we can use our time efficiently. Kind regards, Guus
